ABSTRACTS SUBMISSION
Instructions and Information
Congress delegates are cordially invited to submit abstracts of their scientific work for presentation as a free communication at WORLDLAB EUROMEDLAB 2011. Each registered delegate is entitled to submit a maximum of 3 abstracts as presenting author.
Abstracts can be submitted on all fields of Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Clinical Molecular Biology and Laboratory Medicine in the broader sense. A specified topic list can be found on page 4. Presentation of free communications is predominantly by poster. A limited number of abstracts will be selected for an oral presentation in the congress symposia. Authors wishing to compete for these oral communication slots should mark the appropriate field on the on-line abstract submission form. Properly submitted abstracts will be sent to experts for review and selection for oral communication.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
The text must be clear, concise and written in proper English;
The content must not have been previously published in academic journals or subject to peer review;
Significant technical information must not be withheld. Abstracts should absolutely contain results.
Statements such as "results will be discussed" are not acceptable and will lead to rejecting the abstract.
STRUCTURE OF THE ABSTRACT
Abstracts should be structured and must include:
- A brief introduction stating the purpose of the investigation and its relevance to laboratory medicine
- description of the methodology used
- results, supported by statistical or other evidence to show their validity
- conclusions
the body of the abstract should not exceed 250 words (the word count of the body of the abstract as generated by the MS-Word/extra/word count feature)
Abstracts must be prepared as Word document
GENERAL INFORMATION
Deadline for receipt
Abstracts must be submitted within 15th January 2011, 18:30 Berlin time.
Anyway, earlier submission of abstracts is welcome.
Confirmation of receipt
Receipt of the abstracts will be acknowledged by numbered e-mail immediately after submission.
Notification of acceptance or rejection
Authors will be notified of the acceptance or rejection of their abstracts after 1st March 2011.
Registration
Anyone presenting an abstract (no more than 3 as a presenting author) must register for the Congress and pay the appropriate fee.
HOW TO PREPARE AND SEND IN AN ABSTRACT
It is important to carefully follow the instructions indicated below. Incorrectly prepared abstracts will be rejected.
IMPORTANT: Do not send in an abstract more than once!
Abstracts can be submitted by the Internet only using the on line web form.
Abstracts must be prepared offline in advance since you will be asked to upload a complete file at step 2 of the online abstracts submission procedure.
Abstracts may be no longer than 250 words (Title, Authors’ names and affiliations excluded).
Abstracts must be prepared as Word documents as follows:
Word version: MS Word for Windows version 2000 (.doc)
Font: Arial
Font dimension: 8pt
Symbols: "Symbol" font can be accepted if enclosed as follows ONLY: select "Symbol" from the "Insert" menu. Then select "Arial" or, if Arial is not provided, "Normal text" in the "Type of font" box. You can now look for your symbol and insert it in your abstract. IMPORTANT: if the symbol is selected from any other Font type, it will be turned into an unidentified sign when printed out. For a final check, please select all the text of your abstract ("Select all" from the "Edit" menu) and check if the Font box shows "Arial" font. If not, it means that you have included a font different from "Arial". In this last case, please check your abstract and identify where the different font has been used. This font must be replaced by an "Arial" symbol font.
Tables and figures: tables and figures are not allowed
References: references are not allowed
Title: the title should be brief and specific; please do not use abbreviations. Use bold font and capital letters.
Body of the abstract: the body of the abstract should not exceed 250 words, (approximately 1500 characters, spaces included). Please note that the word and characters count of the BODY of the abstract does not include title, authors’ names and affiliations. The text must be left justified and single-spaced. Paragraphs and indentations must be avoided. “Background”, “Methods”, “Results” and “Conclusions” must start on a new line (see “Model abstract”).
Authors: authors’ names must be written in plain font. Authors’ name must start with the initial(s) to be followed by the second names. The author presenting the abstract at the congress must be underlined. Each author must indicate department, institution, town and country (no country abbreviation before postal code). Please indicate the E-mail address of the corresponding author at the end (see “Model abstract”). In case of more than one affiliation, it is necessary to add superscript numbers to each author name and precede each affiliation with the corresponding superscript number. NB: run on and do not start a new line with a new affiliation!
Abbreviations: use standard abbreviations only. When you use non-standard abbreviations, spell out the full word at first mentioning and insert the abbreviation in parentheses. Then use the abbreviation consistently.
Authors must be typed also in the “List of Authors” box at step 1 (online step) and they must be enlisted by indicating:
- Family name
- Comma
- Initial of the First name
- Reference number to affiliation (if any) in brackets
- Semicolon
Example:
Smith, J. (1); Little, R. (2)
(1) Research Lab. Diagnostics, city, country
(2) Microbiology Lab., city, country

Do not forget to include in this box the name of the presenting Author.
If not included, the name will not appear inside the abstracts book index.
